วัดตระพังเงิน เป็นโบราณสถานสำคัญที่ตั้งอยู่บริเวณขอบตระพังเงินด้านทิศตะวันตกของวัดมหาธาตุ (คำว่า ตระพัง หมายถึง สระน้ำหรือหนองน้ำ) ห่างจากวัดมหาธาตุ 300 เมตร โบราณสถานนี้ไม่มีกำแพงแก้ว ประกอบด้วยเจดีย์ทรงพุ่มข้าวบิณฑ์หรือทรงดอกบัวตูมเป็นประธาน ที่เรือนธาตุทั้งสี่ด้านประดิษฐานพระพุทธรูปยืนและพระพุทธรูปปางลีลา มีวิหารประกอบอยู่ด้านหน้า เป็นที่ประดิษฐานพระพุทธรูปปางมารวิชัย ทางด้านตะวันออกของเจดีย์เป็นเกาะที่มีโบสถ์ตั้งอยู่กลางน้ำ
