History & Significance

The Phu Phan Museum and Planetarium was established by the Sakon Nakhon Provincial Administrative Organization to preserve and present the historical, cultural, and natural heritage of Sakon Nakhon. The province has a long history dating back to prehistoric times, with dinosaur fossils discovered in the Phu Phan mountain range and ancient settlements contemporary with the Ban Chiang civilization. This museum serves as a central hub to educate locals and tourists about the evolution of the region, its diverse ethnic groups, and its deep-rooted connection to Buddhism.

Highlights & What to See

The museum's main exhibition is divided into nine distinct zones:

• Overture Room: Features a video presentation introducing Sakon Nakhon's identity as the 'City of 4 Dhamma' (Nature, Dhamma, Culture, and Civilization) and its appeal as a livable and lovable travel destination.
• Miraculous Phu Phan Exhibition Room: Displays prehistoric traces from thousands of years ago, including fossils of organisms and dinosaurs from the Cretaceous period.
• Bung Tam Forest Room: Showcases the ecology of the Isan peat swamp forest and seasonal floodplains along riverbanks, highlighting the natural fertility of the local forests and water sources.
• Nong Han and the Founding of Sakon Nakhon Room: Explores the history of Nong Han, a massive freshwater lake crucial to the livelihoods and settlement of the local people.
• Sakon Nakhon People Room: Tells the stories of six local ethnic groups (Phu Thai, Thai Yo, Thai Yoy, Thai Kalerng, Thai Lao, and Thai So) and two nationalities (Thai-Chinese and Thai-Vietnamese).
• Royal Tribute Room: Commemorates the historical visits of King Rama IX and Queen Sirikit to Sakon Nakhon.
• Honorary Exhibition Room: Focuses on the royal concepts of the 'Sufficiency Economy'.
• Land of Dhamma Room: Dedicated to the revered forest temple tradition, highlighting the teachings of Phra Ajahn Mun Bhuridatto, who laid the foundation for Dhutanga Kammatthana meditation practices.
• Outdoor Sculpture Zone: Features sculptures reflecting local lifestyles and the 'Land of 4 Dhamma' concept.

In addition to the main museum, the onsite Science Center and Planetarium features engaging science and astronomy exhibitions. The planetarium dome runs video presentations about the stars and the solar system with six daily showtimes: 09:30, 10:30, 11:30, 13:30, 14:30, and 15:30.

Visitor Information

The Phu Phan Museum and Planetarium is open from Monday to Saturday (closed on Sundays) from 09:00 to 16:30. Admission to the museum and the planetarium shows is free of charge.
