Manee Chonlakarn Temple, Royal Monastery

Located in Phrommasat Subdistrict, this ancient and important temple is considered the gateway to Lopburi. It is believed to have been built during the reign of King Narai the Great. Originally named Wat Koh Kaeo (Glass Island Temple) because it was situated in the middle of the Lopburi River. Currently, a road has been cut through the middle of the temple, so it no longer resembles an island. His Majesty King Chulalongkorn (King Rama V) bestowed the new name Wat Manee Chonlakarn upon the temple.

Interesting things within the temple include:

Luang Por Saeng Chedi is a tall, slender, white square pagoda that can be seen from afar and is considered a symbol of the temple. It resembles the square pagodas of the Chiang Saen (Lanna) period. It is highly revered by the people of Lopburi province and nearby areas. His Royal Highness Prince Damrong Rajanubhab recorded that the creator of this pagoda was Luang Por Saeng, or Phra Arjan Saeng, the teacher of Somdet Phuttha Chan (To Phromma Rangsi), built during the reign of King Rama IV.

The Bodhi tree: His Majesty King Chulalongkorn (King Rama V) germinated seeds and brought them to plant. Wat Manee Chonlakarn, Royal Monastery (Dhamma), has been an important temple since ancient times. It is a royal temple receiving patronage from kings and the royal family. Due to its island-like geography, surrounded by water, making it suitable for royal visits, many high-ranking royals visited to perform merit-making, offer Kathina robes, and rest.
