Khlong Phanom National Park

History & Significance

Khlong Phanom National Park was officially established as a national park on November 18, 2000. Spanning an area of approximately 410.4 to 460 square kilometers (about 290,000 rai) across the Khlong Sok, Phanom, and Phlu Thuan subdistricts of Phanom District in Surat Thani Province, it protects a highly fertile rainforest ecosystem. The park serves as a vital headwater source for the Tapi River, ensuring the ecological balance of the region.

Highlights & What to See

The park is characterized by rugged limestone mountains covering about 80% of the area, featuring towering cliffs that resemble a massive natural wall. The highest peak reaches approximately 870 meters above sea level. Key attractions within the park include:

• Rafflesia (Bua Phut): The world's largest flower, which blooms here from November to April when temperature and soil moisture are ideal. Park rangers are available to guide visitors to see these rare blooms.
• Giant Tree (Ton Cha Muang): An enormous tree so large that it requires about 20 people holding hands to wrap around its trunk.
• Caves & Waterfalls: Explore the fascinating Tham Kaeo (Glass Cave), Tham Nam Lot Khao Wong (Khao Wong Water-flowing Cave), and Ton Sai Waterfall.
• Pha Dong Rak Viewpoint: A scenic spot offering panoramic views of the surrounding limestone cliffs and lush valleys.

The park is also home to diverse wildlife, including elephants, deer, tapirs, tigers, bears, serows, wild boars, gibbons, monkeys, pheasants, and various bird species.

Visitor Information

The park is open daily from 08:00 to 16:30. Admission fees are 20 THB for Thai adults (10 THB for children) and 100 THB for foreign adults (50 THB for children). Facilities include visitor bungalows, a campsite, a welfare restaurant, and parking spaces. Visitors planning to see the Rafflesia are highly recommended to contact the park in advance to check the blooming status.
