History & Significance

The Chao Pho-Chao Mae Chum Saeng Shrine, also known among locals as San Chao Pho Khlong Chorakhe Phuak (Guardian Spirit of the Crocodile Canal Shrine), was established out of the deep faith of the Chinese merchants and residents living in the Chum Saeng Market. According to local legend, a mysterious log floated along the Nan River and kept circling against the current right in front of the shrine. The guardian spirit then appeared in a villager's dream, instructing them to retrieve the log and carve it into his image. The spirit promised to reside within the wooden carving to protect the community from disasters, bring prosperity to their businesses, and grant safety to all travelers.

Another romantic legend tells of the love story between Chao Pho (the male guardian spirit) and Chao Mae Koei Chai (a female guardian spirit from the Koei Chai subdistrict in Chum Saeng). The spirit possessed a medium to ask the villagers to arrange a formal marriage proposal. Chao Pho then traveled by boat with traditional wedding gifts (Khan Mak) to marry Chao Mae Koei Chai. Following the wedding, the villagers invited Chao Mae Koei Chai to reside in Chum Saeng alongside Chao Pho. A new wooden image was carved for her to stand beside Chao Pho, and the shrine was officially renamed Chao Pho-Chao Mae Chum Saeng Shrine.

Visitors to the shrine can pay respects to the sacred wooden carvings of Chao Pho and Chao Mae, which are housed inside the beautifully decorated Chinese-style shrine. The site offers a serene view as it is situated right next to the mouth of Khlong Chorakhe Phuak (Crocodile Canal), reflecting the traditional riverside lifestyle of Nakhon Sawan. It is a popular spot for locals and travelers to pray for success in business, safety during journeys, and protection from harm.

Visitor Information

The shrine is open daily to the public from 07:00 AM to 05:00 PM. Admission is free of charge. Visitors are encouraged to dress politely and respect the local customs when entering the sacred prayer areas.

The shrine is located in the Chum Saeng district of Nakhon Sawan Province, situated adjacent to the mouth of Khlong Chorakhe Phuak near the Nan River. Visitors can travel by local transport or private car to the Chum Saeng Market area to reach the shrine.
