Ban Prasat Archaeological Site (Ban Prasat Museum)

History & Significance

First surveyed and excavated in 1983 (B.E. 2526), Ban Prasat is a major archaeological site encircled by a moat and earthen rampart, with the Than Prasat stream running along its northern boundary. Evidence indicates human habitation spanning from the prehistoric to early historic eras, dating back roughly 1,500 to 3,000 years. The community belonged to Dvaravati and ancient Khmer cultural traditions, practicing rice farming and animal husbandry, while utilizing bronze implements.

The site offers several open-air and museum highlights:

• Excavated Human Skeletons: Ancient human remains discovered at depths ranging from 1.5 to 5 meters, serving as evidence of long-term continuous settlement.
• Ancient Artifacts & Pottery: Discoveries include distinctive trumpet-mouth pottery vessels, earthen containers, and bronze tools.
• Three Excavation Pits: Three decorated excavation pits are open for public viewing within Ban Than Prasat village, all conveniently located within walking distance of each other.
• Ban Prasat Museum: Positioned at the village entrance, the museum acts as the primary educational center displaying artifacts and factual history.
