Ban Kanokmanee Museum (Phraya Atthayasai Visut Residence)

History & Significance

Ban Kanokmanee was built in 1933 (B.E. 2476) by Ammat Tho Phraya Atthayasai Visut (Chot Kanokmanee), who served as the governor of Uttaradit Province from 1931 to 1933. After retiring from government service, he settled down in Uttaradit with his family. The original estate consisted of three applied Thai-style hardwood houses connected by verandas. Today, one remaining house serves as a museum dedicated to preserving the family's legacy and regional history.

Highlights & What to See

The museum showcases several well-preserved historical rooms filled with rare personal artifacts and antiques:

• Buddha Room: Built by Hainanese Chinese craftsmen, this room features a curved wooden ceiling, three-tier push-out windows, and houses a Sukhothai-style standing molded Buddha statue in royal attire along with several Rattanakosin-era Buddha statues. It is considered the most exquisite room in the house.
• Phraya Atthayasai Visut's Bedroom: Displays personal belongings and collections, including a large Sakhon basin used for holding water for sacred water ceremonies.
• Working Room: Displays official certificates accompanying various royal decorations conferred upon Phraya Atthayasai Visut.
• Khun Ying Khae's Bedroom: Showcases a complete floral washbasin set imported from England, a handbag crafted from Makha wood burl, and Ayutthaya-period Benjarong porcelain.
• Khanom Thian Sawei Origin: Khun Chidduang Kanokmanee, daughter of Phraya Atthayasai Visut, invented the famous Khanom Thian Sawei dessert here. Made from sticky rice stirred in a brass wok with brown sugar and honey, scented with candle smoke, mixed with white sesame, and wrapped in banana leaves pressed with an antique iron, it remains Uttaradit's most famous signature souvenir.

Visitor Information
