Wat Tham Kho Sok (Wat Rong Kho): Uthai Thani's Historic Temple

Step back in time at Wat Tham Kho Sok, also known as Wat Rong Kho, a historically significant temple dating back to the early Rattanakosin period in Uthai Thani. Once a site for important civic ceremonies and even executions, this temple now mesmerizes visitors with its stunning ancient murals and unique architecture.

About this Place

Highlights

Wat Tham Kho Sok holds a pivotal place in Uthai Thani's history. It served as the venue for the "Oath of Allegiance" ceremony for local officials and was also tragically used as an execution ground. The temple's true artistic treasures reside within its ordination hall (Ubosot).

  • Exquisite Murals: The Ubosot boasts some of the most beautiful and well-preserved wall paintings in Uthai Thani. Believed to be the work of late Ayutthaya period artisans who lived into the early Rattanakosin era, these murals depict significant scenes from the life of Buddha, including his descent from Tavatimsa heaven and his triumph over Mara. One corner also features a depiction of celestial beings (Thep Chumnum) interspersed with monastic fans (Phad Yot).
  • Unique Viharn Architecture: Intriguingly, the temple's Viharn (assembly hall) is built on a raised platform, higher than the Ubosot. Its pediment is adorned with a striking three-headed elephant motif. Inside, approximately 20 Buddha images are neatly arranged on an altar.
  • Ramakien Stucco Work: The exterior window frames of the Viharn are intricately decorated with stucco reliefs depicting scenes from the Ramakien epic, offering a glimpse into classical Thai literature and art.
  • Ornate Wooden Doors: The Viharn's doors are particularly noteworthy, featuring beautifully carved floral patterns painted in a vibrant red.

Visitor Tips & Best Time to Visit

  • Location: Wat Tham Kho Sok is conveniently located on Si Uthai Road in Uthai Mai Subdistrict, close to the municipal market in Uthai Thani.
  • Explore the Details: Take your time to admire the intricate details of the murals and the stucco work. The subtle artistry is easily missed if you rush.
  • Respectful Attire: As with all Thai temples, visitors are encouraged to dress modestly, covering shoulders and knees.
  • Best Time: Visit during the cooler dry season (November to February) for comfortable exploration. Early mornings or late afternoons are ideal to avoid the midday heat and for better lighting for photography.
