About this Place
History & Significance
Wat Phra That Chae Haeng is a third-class royal temple located in Phu Phiang District, Nan Province. It was constructed during the reign of Phaya Kan Mueang (ruler of Nan from 1326 to 1359) to enshrine seven holy relics, as well as silver and gold votive tablets. These sacred items were gifted by King Maha Thammaracha I (Li Thai) of Sukhothai in 1354, when Phaya Kan Mueang assisted in building Wat Luang Aphai (now Wat Pa Mamuang in Sukhothai). The temple stands as a historical monument reflecting the close bond and alliance between the ancient kingdoms of Nan and Sukhothai. Additionally, the temple is highly significant as its holy well, Nam Bo Kaeo, is used to source sacred water for Nan's official consecration ceremonies.
Highlights & What to See
The main highlight is the Phra That Chae Haeng, a golden bell-shaped stupa that rises prominently on a low hill and can be seen from afar. The architectural style of the chedi is believed to be influenced by Phra That Hariphunchai, and its exterior is covered with Thong Changko (a traditional brass and copper alloy sheet). According to Lanna tradition, this stupa is the official birth-year relic for those born in the Year of the Rabbit (the Chinese zodiac rabbit). Making a pilgrimage here, known as "Chu That," is believed to bring immense merit.
Other notable features include the staircase leading to the chedi, which is adorned with Naga sculptures. The pediment above the entrance of the main Viharn features an exquisite stucco design of entwined Nagas (Nak Kiao), which is a unique and signature element of Nan's local craftsmanship.
Visitor Information
The temple is open daily from 06:00 to 18:00. Admission is free of charge. Visitors are expected to dress respectfully, covering shoulders and knees, in accordance with temple etiquette. Parking is available on-site for visitors.
