วัดมหาธาตุ ตั้งอยู่ห่างจากตัวเมืองพิชัย ไปทางทิศใต้ประมาณ 1 กิโลเมตร เป็นวัดที่สมเด็จพระเจ้าบรมวงศ์เธอฯ กรมพระยานริศรานุวัดติวงศ์ ได้มาประทับเมื่อครั้งเสด็จตรวจราชการหัวเมืองฝ่ายเหนือที่เมืองพิชัย หลักฐานทางโบราณคดีที่พบในวัดมหาธาตุ ได้แก่ เจดีย์ย่อมุมไม้สิบสอง ใบเสมา และโบสถ์ซึ่งภายในประดิษฐานพระพุทธรูปสัมฤทธิ์ปางมารวิชัยขนาดหน้าตักกว้าง 40 นิ้ว ชายสังฆาฎิยาว ปลายเป็นรูปเขี้ยวตะขาบ มีรัศมีรูปเปลว เม็ดพระศกใหญ่และเรียงตัวโค้งลงมาบรรจบกันที่กลางพระนลาฏ เป็นศิลปะแบบสุโขทัย
