Sirikit Dam (Khuen Sirikit)

History & Significance

Originally known as Pha Som Dam, construction of the dam across the Nan River at Khao Pha Som began in 1968 under the Royal Irrigation Department. On May 24, 1968, the dam was graciously granted the name Sirikit Dam in honor of Queen Sirikit. King Bhumibol Adulyadej and Queen Sirikit laid the foundation stone on February 27, 1971, and dam construction was completed in 1972.

The power plant construction was carried out by the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT). The dam and power station were officially opened on March 4, 1977, by Queen Sirikit and Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn. Featuring a clay-core earth-fill structure, Sirikit Dam stands 113.60 meters high and 810 meters long, with a crest width of 12 meters. Its reservoir has a maximum storage capacity of 9,510 million cubic meters, making it the third-largest reservoir in Thailand after Srinagarind and Bhumibol dams.

Highlights & What to See

• Dam Crest Viewpoint: Offers spectacular sunset views over the vast freshwater reservoir, where visitors can observe the local lifestyle of fishermen living on floating rafts.
• Sumalai Garden: Created by EGAT to honor Queen Sirikit on her 60th birthday in 1992. The garden features diverse plant species, a lotus pond, an herbal garden, and the 'Sculpture Towards Light' symbolic monument.
• Queen Sirikit Commemorative Suspension Bridge: A cable-stayed suspension bridge built to celebrate Queen Sirikit's 72nd birthday in 2004, offering scenic photo spots over the water.
• Phra That Klang Nam (Doi Phra That): An important local ancient stupa situated on a hill surrounded by the reservoir waters.
• Luang Pho Chet Kasat: A revered replica Buddha image installed at the dam site for visitors to pay respects.
• Recreational Activities: Water rafting, kayaking, water pedaling, boat tours, an 18-hole golf course along the Nan River, and local product shopping at the OTOP center.

How to Get There

The dam is situated at 40 Moo 10, Pha Lueat Subdistrict, Tha Pla District, Uttaradit Province, impounding the Nan River flowing from Nan Province.
