Phra Prang Sam Yot

ถนนวิชาเยนทร์

Phra Prang Sam Yot

Located on a hill west of the railway line near San Phra Kan, it features three connected prangs joined by a corridor. Phra Prang Sam Yot is of Khmer Bayon style, dating back to the 18th Buddhist century. It is constructed from laterite and decorated with beautiful stucco patterns. The decorative pillars of the doorways are carved in the form of a meditating hermit within a shrine, which is a unique characteristic of Khmer Bayon style decorative doorway pillars. The central prang has a base that originally housed a Buddha image. The wooden ceiling was decorated with red star patterns.

About this Place

To the east, there is a viharn built during the reign of King Narai the Great, housing a large, well-preserved stone Buddha image in the meditation posture, an early Ayutthaya style from around the 20th Buddhist century. Phra Prang Sam Yot was originally a Khmer temple of Mahayana Buddhism. It was later converted into a shrine with a base for a lingam found in all three prangs. During the reign of King Narai, Phra Prang Sam Yot was renovated into a Buddhist temple. A brick-built viharn in Ayutthaya architecture with European elements in its doors and windows was constructed. Inside the viharn, a stone Buddha image in the victory over Mara posture, early Ayutthaya style, is currently displayed outdoors.
