สร้างขึ้นเพื่อรำลึกถึงวีรกรรมแห่งวีรชนผู้สละชีพเพื่อปกป้องผืนแผ่นดินไทย ณ ที่แห่งนี้ โดยพระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวฯ และสมเด็จพระนางเจ้าสิริกิติ์ พระบรมราชินีนาถฯ เสด็จพระราชดำเนินทรงประกอบพิธีเปิดและวางพวงมาลา เมื่อวันที่ 10 กุมภาพันธ์ พ.ศ. 2519 และได้ถือเอาวันนี้ของทุกปีเป็นวันวางพวงมาลาบำเพ็ญกุศลแก่วีรชนจนถึงปัจจุบัน ส่วนพิพิธภัณฑ์ทหารทุ่งช้างนั้นจัดแสดงอาวุธยุทโธปกรณ์ของทหารให้นักท่องเที่ยวได้ศึกษาเรียนรู้เก็บเกี่ยวแง่มุมหนึ่งที่น่าสนใจในประวัติศาสตร์ของเมืองไทย
