Nan City Wall (Kamphaeng Mueang Nan)

History & Significance

The Nan City Wall serves as historical evidence of a self-governing state in the Nan River basin that preserved its unique cultural identity through periods of external alignment with other centers of power. In the past, the rectangular wall was believed to be approximately 3,600 meters long, 3.80 meters high, and 2.50 meters wide. The eastern wall ran parallel to the Nan River and featured Pratu Chai (Victory Gate), used by rulers and royal court members for water transportation toward Rattanakosin. The southern side contained Pratu Chiang Mai and Pratu Tha Li, enabling travel between residents inside and outside the city limits.

Highlights & What to See

Today, the most complete remaining wall segment is 25 meters long and 5 meters high, located along the western and northern wall lines where Mahawong Road meets Anantaworariddhidej Road. In 1993, the Fine Arts Department restored dilapidated sections totaling 415 meters. The site was officially registered as a national ancient monument on October 25, 1994.

The ancient wall is located in Mueang Nan District, Nan Province, along Mahawong Road where it connects with Anantaworariddhidej Road.
