About this Place

History & Significance

Doi Chang reaches an elevation of 1,697 meters above sea level, dividing Huai Chomphu subdistrict in Mueang Chiang Rai district and Wa Wi subdistrict in Mae Suai district. The mountain earned the name Doi Chang (Elephant Mountain) because its contour resembles a mother elephant accompanied by her calf, a sight best viewed from Baan Doi Chang School. The local community primarily consists of three ethnic groups: Akha, Lisu, and Yunnanese Chinese. The area is also home to Doi Chang Buddhist Park, which features a sacred well whose water was historically drawn for the sacred Pipat Sattaya oath-taking ceremony during the reign of King Rama IX.

Highlights & What to See

Doi Chang offers diverse agricultural and natural highlights:

  • Sakura Blossoms: Wild Himalayan cherry trees bloom starting in early January, covering the mountain in pink blossoms for about three weeks.
  • Doi Chang Buddhist Park: Walk through a peaceful bamboo forest housing various Buddha statues and the central sacred spring.
