Chao Pho Thepharak - Chao Mae Thapthim Shrine

History & Significance

The exact founding year of the Chao Pho Thepharak - Chao Mae Thapthim Shrine is unknown. However, an inscription on an ancient Chinese bell inside the shrine indicates that Mr. Hong Piao Sae Phu from Hainan Province, China, presented the bell in 1870, during the reign of King Rama V. Originally, the shrine was a wooden structure built on high stilts along the riverbank. Over time, riverbank erosion and deterioration led the local community to rebuild the shrine in 1909, incorporating the nearby Chao Pho Guan Yu Shrine into the new structure.

The shrine holds deep historical significance for the people of Nakhon Sawan. Between 1917 and 1919, a severe epidemic swept through the region. According to local history, the spirit of Chao Pho Thepharak possessed a medium to write sacred paper amulets (known as 'Hu') to protect homes and create holy water for the sick. The epidemic subsided shortly after, cementing the shrine's reputation as a powerful place of spiritual protection and healing.

Highlights & What to See

The current shrine is a half-wood, half-concrete building raised on high stilts. Inside, visitors can pay respects to the main deity, Chao Pho Thepharak (Pung Thao Kong), flanked by Chao Pho Guan Yu on the right and Chao Mae Thapthim (Mazu) on the left. There is also an altar dedicated to the Heaven and Earth deities.

Beyond its spiritual importance, the shrine is one of the best viewpoints to witness the 'two-color river' (Mae Nam Song Si), marking the exact origin where the Ping and Nan rivers meet to form the Chao Phraya River. During the Chinese New Year, the shrine becomes the focal point of the spectacular Pak Nam Pho Chao Pho-Chao Mae Parade, featuring magnificent dragon dances, lion dances, Eng Ko performances, and traditional Hainanese cup dancing.

Visitor Information

The shrine is open daily from 05:00 to 17:00. Admission is free. Visitors are welcome to pray for blessings, good fortune, and protection throughout the year. Parking facilities are available on-site.

How to Get There

The shrine is located on the bank of the Chao Phraya River, directly opposite the Pak Nam Pho Market in Mueang Nakhon Sawan District, Nakhon Sawan Province. Visitors can easily reach the shrine by local transport or private car, with parking available at the site.
