Chao Pho Nakaraj Shrine

History & Significance

Chao Pho Nakaraj Shrine is a historic sanctuary deeply rooted in the Chansen community of Nakhon Sawan. According to local lore, the shrine was first established by "Ah Gong," a Chinese ancestor who repeatedly witnessed two mythical Nagas playing in the ancient pond of Chansen—a historic body of water dating back to the Dvaravati period. Intrigued, he performed a traditional Chinese divination ritual and discovered that Chao Pho Nakaraj (the Naga King) wished for a shrine to be built there. Ah Gong initially constructed a simple zinc-roofed shelter. Over time, devout locals contributed construction materials and funds, transforming the humble shelter into the magnificent cultural landmark seen today.

The shrine is renowned for its exquisite Chinese architectural style, designed in accordance with the philosophies and teachings of Mahayana Buddhism. Inside, visitors can admire and pay respects to a vast collection of sacred deities and statues, including:

• Guan Yu (The God of War and Loyalty)
• Nezha (The Protection Deity)
