About this Place

History & Significance

Wat Chansen was established in 1903 (2446 BE) by Luang Pho Khian, its first abbot, who traveled from Ayutthaya and initiated the temple's construction near the ancient Chansen pond. The Chansen Museum itself was founded by the former abbot, Phra Khru Nisai Jariyakhun (Luang Pho Ot), who was instrumental in its creation. The museum officially opened to the public in 1996 (2539 BE) to preserve and display the historical and archaeological treasures of this ancient Dvaravati-period settlement.

Highlights & What to See

The museum is housed on the ground floor of Phra Mahathat Chedi Sri Chansen, a magnificent stupa designed by Wanida Phuengsunthon in the Dvaravati architectural style. Inside, visitors can explore a vast array of excavated artifacts, including:

  • Ancient amulets and votive tablets
  • Terracotta lamps and clay dolls
  • Lotus bases and Dharmachakra (wheels of Dhamma)
  • Polished stone axes and bronze spearheads

At the center of the exhibition hall stands a life-sized statue of Luang Pho Ot, allowing visitors to pay their respects. Don't miss the beautiful ceiling murals that depict the life of the Buddha and historical narratives of Chansen.
