Bridge on the River Kwai

Located in Tha Makham Subdistrict (Ban Tha Ma Kham), it was built during World War II and is the most crucial bridge on the Death Railway, which ran from Nong Pladuk Junction Station, Ban Pong District, Ratchaburi Province, to Thanbyuzayat, Union of Myanmar (construction began simultaneously in Thailand and Myanmar, meeting at Konkuita in October 1943). It was built to transport Japanese weapons and troops to Myanmar and India. Because the Sai Yok Noi River was deep and swift in some sections, but the ground at the bridge site had the densest lower soil layer, the Japanese engineers chose this location to build the bridge. The Japanese army conscripted Allied prisoners of war, including British, American, Australian, Dutch, and New Zealand soldiers, numbering approximately 61,700, and over 100,000 laborers from China, Vietnam, Java, Malaya, Thailand, Burma, and India, to be the workforce for construction. Initially, a temporary wooden bridge was built 100 meters from the current bridge, taking 3 months to construct. Later, a permanent steel bridge was built. The bridge structure is semicircular, with alternating steel reinforcement and truss structures, supported by concrete piers. The steel used was imported from Malaya and assembled in sections to form the tracks. The bridge is approximately 300 meters long, with 11 steel spans in the middle section. The bridgeheads and the bridge structure were made of wood. Under the control of the Japanese army, construction was completed in just 1 year. The construction of this bridge and railway was extremely difficult, especially along the curved section next to the cliff face at Krasae Cave, with the swift river on one side and dense jungle throughout the route, filled with various dangerous animals, as well as malaria and cholera. There were also shortages of food and harsh punishments. It is estimated that over 49,000 Asian laborers and 16,000 prisoners of war lost their lives, earning this route the name "Death Railway." It has been said that "one railway sleeper on the Death Railway is equivalent to one life." The bridge was officially opened on December 25, 1943. In November 1944, the Bridge on the River Kwai was subjected to several aerial attacks by Allied forces, with heavy bombing causing the central section of the bridge to collapse. On August 15, 1945, Japan announced its surrender, and the war ended. The Thai government purchased this railway line from Britain for 50 million baht and restored it in 1946. The central piers (the 5th and 6th sections) were removed and replaced with two steel spans, and the wooden spans at the ends were also replaced with steel. The total length within Thailand is 322.90 meters, with the entire railway line measuring 415 kilometers. The Bridge on the River Kwai is honored as a "Symbol of Peace" and its story has been adapted into several films, such as "The Bridge on the River Kwai" (released in 1957, based on the novel of the same name, which won 7 Academy Awards) and "The Railway Man" (released in 2013, based on the autobiography of a POW who helped build the bridge), among others. Kanchanaburi Province annually organizes the "Bridge on the River Kwai Week" from late November to early December to commemorate the events of the Death Railway construction during World War II. The event features spectacular light and sound shows, historical and archaeological exhibitions, folk performances, and product sales.
