About this Place

History & Significance

Bo Lek Nam Phi is an ancient natural iron ore site in Uttaradit Province. According to historical records, steel from this site has been processed since the Ayutthaya period to forge weapons for commanders and monarchs. Famous historical weapons containing Nam Phi steel include King Naresuan the Great's scythe sword used in elephant duel combat, Phraya Pichai Dab Hak's Nanthakawut sword, King Narai the Great's sword, and Khun Phaen's Fah Phuen sword. During the reign of King Rama VII, Nam Phi steel was also presented to forge a royal sword for the King. Local traditions hold that Nam Phi steel belongs to the same sacred metal family as Lek Lai, possessing spiritual energy to ward off evil spirits.
